Okay everyone, I have a new topic of discussion. I want you to list out some of the grooves that just plain-and-simply drive you crazy because you just can't figure out how in the hell the drummer pulls it off. Lets have drummer, cd title, and song title if possible.
Here is mine: Gary Novak on the album "Chick Corea Elektric Band II", the track 'Ished'. Drives me insane. For the life of me, I just can't figure out how in the hell he is playing so damn many ghost notes, while simultaneously playing so many damn hi-hat accents and while throwing the time around so damn well. *sigh* [img]tongue.gif[/img]
NOTE: I'm not just talking about "kinda" being able to play the groove- I mean actually being able to exactly reproduce (from a purely technical aspect) the rhythm. Thanks!

The intro to this song kills me. I can't figure out how he's doing a bossa type thing between the bell and hi hat with and underlying reggae beat. That's my take on it, anyways.

Db waltz, Omar. Ridiculous.
But beats that make insane, I ran sound for a friend's band last night and their drummer, I swear, played the same captain Beefheart-esqe beat in every song, every one. he didn't play a straight 4/4 beat the whole night, instead it was this disjointed insane drumming. I'm not sure why he would do that.
At the end of the night I was ready to strangle him because that crappy beat, played on a kit that was worse than my old Japanese starter kit in 1981-ish, duct tape everywhere, was drilling into my head like a diamond tipped light saber. And I also have food poisoning or something going on. I almost jumped out a window.
If I practiced either of these for an afternoon I'd have them but my dog ate my homework.
I've got everything together in 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover except having the hi-hats dead-on perfect. To add insult to injury Gadd makes this look effortless.
Same with Rosanna, my hands are on it but my foot refuses to phrase the 5 note Bo Diddley bass beat correctly.

Shadows In The Rain is one of the best tracks on Zenyatta Mondatta. La Policia surprised me playing it live pretty much note for note.

U R right about 50 Ways, mastering the actual pattern is 1 thing...but getting it to fall into place/pocket, feel & groove like da king Gaddmeister-flash, is altogether another entirely.
Once I got the pattern [LH on HH, RH on SN awa FT, w the "tricky" little LF/HH note on the "a" of 1], it was imperative to realize that i needed to play repeatedly [re: 'endlessly'] along to a copy of the orig or live Central Park version. I still don't feel i have it felt like the E-Gaddmasta [or, "Gaddmasta-E," to 'da rappuh's, as it were.].
Omar on WR-Domino T - stooopit. Just stooopit. Check Sco's Still Warm awa Sting's BOTN vid too for more of the stooopitness. [I am wavering off road a little, here]...

[img]graemlins/storm.gif[/img] A highly successful drummer friend of mine commented ATT it came out that "yeah, but he ain't Weck"...to which i responded, "so, what's yer point?!" Those crazy little inverted [or, "shifted"]backbeat placements that Vince, Weck, Chambers, & Virg use on their solo albums [Hard-Wired Afrique for one example; & such as the MDF'00, Chambers drum vids, & Virg's OTV/SYI for another] used to drive me completely nuts. Some of 'em still do. Tweek-Pizza drove me crazy...literally. As you can see.

That "one" groove for me would be Jimmy Smith's "Organ Grinder's Swing" with Grady Tate on drums. JS swings harder than anybody, ever and that's the most intense swingin' I've ever heard JS play. GT just swings like a monkey on crack.
